The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu over 4 days is one of the most impressive hiking routes in Peru and one of the best alternatives to the classic Inca Trail.
This adventure takes you through an incredible variety of landscapes: from towering snow-capped mountains such as Salkantay, past turquoise glacial lakes, and down into the high jungle filled with lush tropical vegetation. In just a few days, you will experience dramatic changes in climate, altitude, and ecosystems, making this trek a truly unique experience.
During the journey, you will reach the highest point at the Salkantay Pass, over 4,600 metres above sea level, where you will enjoy spectacular views of the Andes. The trail then continues into the cloud forest, passing through local communities, coffee plantations, and less crowded routes, allowing for a more authentic connection with nature and Andean culture.
Finally, the trek culminates in a guided visit to the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu, where you will discover the history and mysteries of one of the wonders of the world.
Why choose the 4-day Salkantay Trek?

Limited spaces: The Inca Trail sells out months in advance.
We begin early with pick-up from your hotel in Cusco and travel to Mollepata, where we will have breakfast before continuing to Challacancha, the starting point of the trek.
The first part of the hike is gradual, ideal for acclimatisation. We walk towards Soraypampa, surrounded by impressive views of snow-capped mountains such as Salkantay and Humantay.
In the afternoon, we hike to Humantay Lake, one of the most iconic highlights of the trek, with its turquoise waters surrounded by glaciers.
Overnight stay in Soraypampa.
This is the most challenging day of the trek.
We start early with a steady ascent to the highest point: the Salkantay Pass (4,650 m), surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks.
From here, we begin a long descent into the cloud forest, where the landscape changes dramatically from cold mountainous terrain to warmer, greener surroundings.
After lunch in Chaullay, we continue to Collpapampa, where we will spend the night.
After an early breakfast, we begin descending through the cloud forest, one of the most biodiverse areas of the trek. Along the way, you may observe a wide variety of flora such as orchids, bromeliads, and bomareas, as well as birds and occasionally local wildlife.
We pass through small communities such as Wiñaypoco and Granadilla, where you will have the opportunity to briefly interact with local families and learn about their way of life in the high jungle.
From this point, we take transport to the Hydroelectric station, where we will have lunch. Afterwards, we continue the final stretch to Aguas Calientes, walking alongside the railway through a tropical environment or, optionally, taking the train (not included).
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, we check into our accommodation to rest before visiting Machu Picchu the following day.
Distance: 10–12 km (hiking)
.The most anticipated day has finally arrived. After the effort of the trek, we will visit the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu.
Very early in the morning, we head to the bus station to ascend to Machu Picchu and arrive at sunrise—one of the most impressive times to experience the site with fewer visitors.
Once inside, we take a guided tour where you will learn in depth about the history, architecture, and mysteries of the Inca civilisation. We will explore the main sectors of the sanctuary, including temples, terraces, ceremonial, and residential areas.
After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore on your own, take photographs, or simply enjoy the unique energy of the site.
Optional: Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain
The visit to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain is not included in the trek and has an additional cost. Due to high demand and limited daily availability, we recommend booking in advance to secure entry.
These hikes offer spectacular panoramic views of Machu Picchu and are ideal for those seeking a more complete and challenging experience.
Afterwards, we descend to Aguas Calientes for lunch (at your own expense) and, in the afternoon, board the train back to Cusco.
