Cultural immersion, high-altitude landscapes, and the most iconic entrance to Machu Picchu
This Lares Trek and Short Inca Trail 4-day itinerary is designed for travelers who want more than a standard hike. It combines the authenticity of the Lares Trek Peru with the historic route of the Lares Trek & Short Inca Trail 4 Days, creating a balanced journey through culture, nature, and history.
Over four days, you’ll experience remote Andean villages, cross high mountain passes, and follow original Inca paths before arriving at Machu Picchu through the legendary Sun Gate. It’s an ideal option for those looking for a Machu Picchu trek in 4 days with comfort, organization, and a deeper connection to the destination.

Your journey begins with an early morning departure from Cusco towards the Lares Valley, one of the most authentic and less crowded trekking routes in Peru.
Before starting the hike, you’ll relax in the Lares hot springs, surrounded by the Andes. This is a perfect way to ease into the experience before heading out on your first walk.
The trail takes you through traditional Andean landscapes, where you’ll see alpacas grazing and meet local communities that still preserve their ancestral way of life. This first day is designed for gradual acclimatization while introducing you to the cultural richness of the region.
Overnight camping in an Andean community.
This is the most physically demanding and rewarding day of the trek. You’ll hike up to the highest point of the route, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and wide-open valleys.
The pace is steady and adapted to your comfort, allowing you to fully enjoy the surroundings. Reaching the summit is a memorable moment, offering panoramic views and a strong sense of accomplishment.
Overnight camping in the mountains.
After an early transfer to Ollantaytambo, you’ll board the train to Km 104, where the Short Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu begins.
From here, you’ll follow original Inca stone paths through lush cloud forest, leading to the impressive archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna.
The highlight of the day is reaching Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. From this vantage point, you’ll get your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu — one of the most iconic moments of any Inca Trail experience.
Overnight in a hotel in Aguas Calientes.
The final day begins early, allowing you to explore Machu Picchu during the quiet morning hours.
You’ll enjoy a guided tour of Circuit 3, focusing on the lower terraces and some of the most important Inca structures, including the Temple of the Sun and ceremonial areas.
After the visit, you’ll have free time before returning to Cusco by train and private transfer.
Optional upgrades include hiking Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (advance booking required).
