What to do in Arequipa: the White City
If you are wondering what to do in Arequipa, the short answer is: walk slowly. This city in...
Leer articuloIf you are building a route through southern Peru, you are probably asking how many days in Arequipa are enough, and how much time to give the canyon. The answer depends on your pace and what you want to experience, but there is a simple rule: two days covers the city, three adds the Colca without too much rushing, and four lets you enjoy it all at ease. Here is each option, with a clear and realistic Arequipa itinerary.
Before deciding, it helps to separate the two destinations, because they are very different:

Two days is the minimum we recommend if you don’t want to feel rushed. If you are weighing Arequipa 2 or 3 days, think of it this way: with two days you see the city’s essentials; with three you can add the Colca or simply slow down.
Day 1: historic center and flavors
Day 2: Santa Catalina and countryside

This is the most popular combination, because it covers the essentials of both destinations without wearing you out. Travelers asking how many days for Colca Canyon are usually happy with two days and one night in the valley.
Day 1: Arequipa
Spend the day on the highlights of the center: Plaza de Armas, La Compañía, Santa Catalina and sunset at Yanahuara. It is a compact day, but it leaves the city’s essentials covered.
Day 2: Arequipa → Chivay (Colca)
Day 3: Cruz del Cóndor → return
This format works well if your schedule is tight, but keep in mind it involves early wake-ups and long hours on the road. To prepare for the trip, see our guide to the Colca Canyon.
If you don’t want to feel like you are racing the clock, four days is the sweet spot. You can enjoy the city unhurried, do the Colca with more margin, and keep some time for surprises or rest.
Option A: more time in the canyon
Option B: more time in the city
Altitude tip: Arequipa sits at about 2,300 meters, and the Colca valley is above 3,600, with passes over 4,800. If you arrive from the coast, an extra day in the city before heading up to the canyon helps you acclimatize and lowers the risk of altitude sickness. Avoid heavy meals, drink water and take it slowly.
If you are interested in trekking inside the canyon, plan for five days or more, but that is a different kind of trip.

Arequipa usually sits between Lima and Cusco, or between Cusco and Puno, depending on the direction of your route. Some common combinations:

If we had to sum it up in one line: three days is the ideal balance to see Arequipa and the Colca without losing quality. With two days you see the city, with three you add the canyon efficiently, and with four you live it without rushing and with room for the altitude.
A practical rule:
And remember: rather than just asking how many days you need, think about the travel pace you want. A well-planned itinerary avoids unnecessary transfers, back-to-back early starts and the feeling of having seen everything “in passing.”
