How many days do you need in Arequipa and Colca

If you are building a route through southern Peru, you are probably asking how many days in Arequipa are enough, and how much time to give the canyon. The answer depends on your pace and what you want to experience, but there is a simple rule: two days covers the city, three adds the Colca without too much rushing, and four lets you enjoy it all at ease. Here is each option, with a clear and realistic Arequipa itinerary.

How many days by what you want to see

Before deciding, it helps to separate the two destinations, because they are very different:

  • Arequipa city: colonial heritage, museums, food and viewpoints. It is mostly done on foot and does not demand much physical effort.
  • Colca Canyon: high-altitude landscapes, Andean villages, hot springs and the Cruz del Cóndor. It means several hours on the road and mountain passes above 4,800 meters (15,700 feet).

As a quick reference:

  • City only: 2 days.
  • City + essential Colca: 3 days (2 in the city plus one night in the valley, or 1 in the city plus a 2-day Colca trip).
  • City + Colca at a relaxed pace, or with hiking: 4 days or more.

Arequipa in 2 days

Two days is the minimum we recommend if you don’t want to feel rushed. If you are weighing Arequipa 2 or 3 days, think of it this way: with two days you see the city’s essentials; with three you can add the Colca or simply slow down.

Day 1: historic center and flavors

  • Morning: Plaza de Armas, Cathedral and the Church of the Society of Jesus.
  • Midday: lunch at a traditional picantería (rocoto relleno, adobo or chupe de camarones).
  • Afternoon: stroll through San Lázaro and visit the Museo Santuarios Andinos, home of Juanita the mummy.
  • Sunset: Yanahuara viewpoint, with El Misti in the background.

Day 2: Santa Catalina and countryside

  • Morning: Santa Catalina Monastery, best first thing to avoid crowds.
  • Afternoon: San Camilo Market, Sabandía Mill or the Carmen Alto and Sachaca viewpoints.
  • Evening: a relaxed dinner and, if schedules match, a candlelit night visit to the monastery (check current times).

Arequipa + Colca in 3 days

This is the most popular combination, because it covers the essentials of both destinations without wearing you out. Travelers asking how many days for Colca Canyon are usually happy with two days and one night in the valley.

Day 1: Arequipa

Spend the day on the highlights of the center: Plaza de Armas, La Compañía, Santa Catalina and sunset at Yanahuara. It is a compact day, but it leaves the city’s essentials covered.

Day 2: Arequipa → Chivay (Colca)

  • Early morning departure from Arequipa.
  • Drive through the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve, with stops to see vicuñas and alpacas.
  • Cross the highest point of the route (over 4,800 meters) and descend toward Chivay.
  • Free afternoon: La Calera hot springs and rest in the valley.

Day 3: Cruz del Cóndor → return

  • Very early start to reach the Cruz del Cóndor and watch the condors fly.
  • Visit villages like Yanque or Maca, with colonial churches and farming terraces.
  • Return to Arequipa in the afternoon, or a direct connection to Puno or Cusco if your tour allows it.

This format works well if your schedule is tight, but keep in mind it involves early wake-ups and long hours on the road. To prepare for the trip, see our guide to the Colca Canyon.

4 relaxed days

If you don’t want to feel like you are racing the clock, four days is the sweet spot. You can enjoy the city unhurried, do the Colca with more margin, and keep some time for surprises or rest.

Option A: more time in the canyon

  • Day 1: Arequipa (historic center and Santa Catalina).
  • Day 2: Arequipa → Chivay, hot springs in the afternoon.
  • Day 3: Cruz del Cóndor, valley villages and a short hike in the canyon.
  • Day 4: return to Arequipa with time for viewpoints, a picantería lunch or shopping.

Option B: more time in the city

  • Days 1 and 2: full Arequipa (center, museums, food, countryside).
  • Days 3 and 4: 2-day Colca trip, with a night in the valley.

Altitude tip: Arequipa sits at about 2,300 meters, and the Colca valley is above 3,600, with passes over 4,800. If you arrive from the coast, an extra day in the city before heading up to the canyon helps you acclimatize and lowers the risk of altitude sickness. Avoid heavy meals, drink water and take it slowly.

If you are interested in trekking inside the canyon, plan for five days or more, but that is a different kind of trip.

How it fits your Peru route

Arequipa usually sits between Lima and Cusco, or between Cusco and Puno, depending on the direction of your route. Some common combinations:

  • Lima → Arequipa → Cusco: ideal if you want to combine coast, colonial city and Machu Picchu in one trip.
  • Cusco → Puno → Arequipa: perfect for finishing with Lake Titicaca, then the White City and the Colca.
  • Arequipa → Cusco direct: the quickest option if you fly in and have few days.

A few ideas to help you decide:

  • If your trip is 7 to 8 days in total, 2 days in Arequipa is usually enough.
  • If it is 10 to 12 days, adding the Colca (3 or 4 days in total) balances the route nicely.
  • If you travel with children, older travelers or low altitude tolerance, choose the 4-day format.

Recommendation

If we had to sum it up in one line: three days is the ideal balance to see Arequipa and the Colca without losing quality. With two days you see the city, with three you add the canyon efficiently, and with four you live it without rushing and with room for the altitude.

A practical rule:

  • Short on time: 2 days in Arequipa only.
  • Medium time: 3 days with the Colca (city + 2-day excursion).
  • Want to enjoy without rushing: 4 days, with an extra night in the city or in the valley.

And remember: rather than just asking how many days you need, think about the travel pace you want. A well-planned itinerary avoids unnecessary transfers, back-to-back early starts and the feeling of having seen everything “in passing.”
